Planted mine yesterday. Instructions that came with them said:
Plant at a depth of 3cm.

I assume that this meant stuff the little blighters into a hole that was about 3cm deep. Not plant so that the top is 3cm below the surface.

You don't really want to know what is going to eat them  :alien:  :rendeer:  :cyclopsani:
If you did you would never sleep at night. Especially in the dark, cold, long winter nights. :albino:

I thought you just push them down deep enough so there little heads are just beneath the surface?  That's what I did last year and they were great :D  ( someone once told me that if the're sticking up they are prime targets for Blackbirds?

Definitely attract blackbirds who like to pull them up. I leave the tops  showing but keep replanting them for the first few weeks until their roots hold them in.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

We've always started ours off in the greenhouse in egg trays so that they get a bit of a root ball started and the green bit is too long to be interesting to birds.  Never had a problem.

just put a bit of fleece over the top until they are established so the birds can't get em.

Don't push them in .....Aaaargh !!!!!!!!!!

When you push them in you compact the soil beneath the roots. Then when they grow the little B****** force themselves out of the ground and have you scouring the countryside for imaginary badgers.

Dibble a hole n pop them in so the nose just pokes out.

Don't push it. You ruin the dormant root buds. Just gentle. Nothing eats them. 8)

I have no rabbits mind.

You can net or burry them from birds , makes no much difference, whichever takes your fancy.

mine get undermined by moles, and also dragged down their runs, and brought to the surface yards from where I planted them     I must have replanted them half a dozen times, they were all over the place
