Best Book (after Johns, it says it is on Amazon's tables)
« on: September 12, 2008, 00:26 »
I'm ordering Brisingr from amazon.co.uk and seeing as i get free delivery for orders over £15 i was poking around for books and stuff to buy instead of giving them £4 for the delivery charge and more. Spied the gardening -> fruit and veg section and looked at the 'top books' list. Lo and behold our very own John is at the top! So of course I've got that sitting pretty in my trolley... but what book should i buy to fill the last few pounds? I'm leaning towards joy larkcom's 'Grow your own vegetables'. But would you disagree and say there is a better book out there? If so... do tell  :)

I agree with Srebmob. But I also wouldn't be without my old Reader's Digest   Food from Your Garden as it tells me how to cook it as well.

any other suggestions? I'm looking to hopefully buy the book in the next week. It'll be really helpful. Thanks for the tip on herb gardening, but I'm more interested in veg at the moment. Pity i cant get the readers digest matron.

It is vegetable and herb expert - more veg than herbs.
You can still get the reader's digest book and I have just looked on Amazon and it has been updated to  a title of Food From Your Garden and Allotment!
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0276442636/ref=sib_rdr_dp
and it is only £9.74. Hmmmm shall I update mine.

have you got John Seymores New Self Sufficiency book?  or the Vegetable gardener's bible by Edwarc C Smith?  I'd recommend both of these, after Johns  :D

Personally I like Carol Klein's 'Grow Your Own Veg' - I've just had to return my library copy as they refused to renew it any more (well the nice ladies had already renewed it far more times than they are actually supposed to!   ). I just went onto Amazon myself to order a copy and I see she has a new 'journal' version coming out in early October, so now I don't know which one to get! Think I'll ask OH for the new one for my birthday (about a week after it's published  :D ) and then either get the original one as well or swap it if I don't like the new one!
Sal

Organic...so far!

Totally selfish request here FCG.
If you order through Amazon. Can you go through the link on www.medenvalerugby.co.uk then our rugby club gets a few bob and you bill is no different whatsoever.
Thanks in advance. :)

I like you have the original, but I had a quick look at the new one the other day and I think they have took out the Poultry and bee section  :(

Oh, that's no good then - I will stick with my original. Thought they may have  updated some of the planting / harvesting times for our new warmer climate (not).

My personal favourites are Jane Perrone's 'Allotment Handbook' and Bob Flowerdew's 'No work gardening'
I started with 'The Vegetable Expert' but think that if I were starting from scratch now, it would be too much for me to absorb. I think 'Grow Your Own Veg' is a nice gentle introduction. :)

Edit: forgot to say that John's book is top of my Christmas list :D
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
