Just to be different I put wood glue on the end of the perch bars

if they don't come out in the morning you'll know why, they'll be stuck to the perches.

I was biting my tongue.  But you may have noticed I have been busy on here today.  I may have though it but did not have time to mention it.  I prefer satins any way.

Probably not as red mites hide away during daylight.  You are probably thinking of red velvet mites

No, I think what sued is thinking of is little creatures similar in size to an eariwg?  They were about half inch long or just under?  That's what we used to call bloodsuckers anyway when I was a child.

Many people don't realise they have red mite, at first as they think all red mites are red!!  But when I tell them to look for teeny weeny light grey things that turn red after a nice feast of chicken blood, sometimes they say oh I saw something, but thought red mites wre bigger.

Sad to say I've got them back in my layers house, so was down there this afternoon cleaning out and spraying with poultryshield.  also the 2 nest boxes in there.  One once sprayed and dried out, I dusted red mite powder over, the other one once it had dried I covered avery crack and crease with cheap petroleum jelly, and the one with mite powder had quite a few mites in it, and the one with the cheap PJ had a lot of mites, but they had got caught up in the PJ and were stuck.  Some were still alive, but most had suffocated.  so that was all cleaned and sprayed and the mites were in the joints of the perches a lot as Brian makes a rame up of 3 perches on legs and there were thousands in the joints, so I got out and killed as many as I could, sprayed them with PS and took them up the grden so I can creosote them, but I tipped a boiling kettle of water all in the joints first!!!  But they've got another set of perches to use so that I don't hav to put their own set back for several weeks while the creosote soaks into the wood.  Then I many polyurethane the perches too!!!!

Like roughlee, I WILL WIN!!!!!   Death to all redmites!!!

Ok as mentioned earlyer in this thread I was going to email the makers of Duramitex (harkers) to ask why it was discontinued. I also noticed that they make another product Harkamectin = Treatment for, worms, feather lice and mite I asked if it can be used for chickens. Please read the information below
Thank you for your enquiry about our products.

Duramitex has been discontinued as European Legislation on the active ingredient (malathion) meant that we could no longer obtain a license for its production.  We were obliged to withdraw it from sale as of December 2007 – wholesale and retail outlets were permitted a further 12 months to clear their stock. As you are probably aware, it was an extremely popular product and it is now very scarce!

Harkamectin is an Ivermectin based product for the treatment of internal and external parasites and would be suitable for the treatment of red mite.  However, it is not licensed for use on chickens or any bird that may be considered for human consumption (this includes the eggs).  Should you decide to go ahead, you should withdraw eggs for at least 28 days and meat for 56 days.  Unfortunately, we cannot recommend anything else from our range that would be suitable.

If Aunty wants the email address of the sender at Harkers I will forward it  on to her.
