Another Red Mite thread. Week two and there BACK.
« on: September 06, 2008, 14:55 »
Ok another Red Mite thread but I come bearing video so this may help others.  This is the first time I have had Red Mite.  Because of the weather I have not cleaned out my chucks for 2weeks    but the litter was cleanish and DRY so I was not worried.  Last time I cleaned out I gave a liberal shaking of the Red Mite Powder.

Past 2 nights I have wondered at the "stupid" chickens why they where piling in to the nest boxes!!!!!
Last night

Previous night

There are FIVE chickens in the coop!! THREE in one NEST BOX.
Stupid chickens I thought.
This morining it had stopped raining !!!!!! Chuck cleaning time.
I removed the purches  and I always make sure I get all the cr*p out with my finger I did this time and got a red stain !!!!! Oh dear was not the first thought that went though my mind.
Below one of the cups in which the perch rests.  Blood is the darker area.

VIDEO OF RED SPIDER MITE
The black dots are red spider mites.  Sorry for the quality of the video but it was taken on my phone

As it is raining at the moment and the land very very wet I can not wash out with Jeys or anything else.  So I have opted for a dry method. One kill them buy hand (very satisfying)then mite spray and powder the H*LL out of the coop.

I have a couple of questions.
1. Should this cure the problem.
2. Should I powder the girls. I can not tell if they have any mites on them as they where having a sand bath while I was cleaning. I have looked and they may have thousands of mites on them or it might just be sand!!!
Stuart

Dont worry I am just paranoid duckie.

If I get the wrong end of the stick its because I have speed read. Honest.

Blar blar blar blar snorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre.

Hi Stuart. Sorry you've got them.

Firstly, the red mite powder is a deterrant for them and won't actually kill them.
Never had them but I think the only method to get rid is...

Jeyes or Virkon-s to thoroughly clean out.

Poultry shield to start killing them (can take 3 days).

Diatom powder all over the house and the chickens to keep down reinfestations.

Use the mite-kill both on your birds and the timber and it should be good night Vienna.

Does the mite-kill have a lasting effect Bodger ?

Just thinking about any re-infestation. Or will it see off teh mites and eggs in one go ?

It has a long lasting effect on timber so it should have a residual effect on the birds as well..

How would you apply it to the chucks?   Just spray on or spray in a particular place/s

A couple of squirts right at the base of the feathers around the vent, one each under the 'arm pits' and for good measure, I'd lift the feathers up at the back of the neck and squirt at the base of the feathers again.

I use a blow torch on the perch holders and perch ends, I also put crawling insect powder in the perch holders, the floor and the birds get a liberal sprinkle with gold label get rid powder and I paint the nooks and crannies with paraffin so far this year touch wood the girls have been fine.

And how often do you do this?  Knowing my luck the coop would catch fire.

Rub plenty of fresh garlic cloves along your perches and where your perches sit. I do this and although it is a powerful smell I have very few red mites.

Worth a try as it has always worked for me.
