new ducks, few issues
« on: September 03, 2008, 13:54 »
brought home 3 khaki campbell ducks yesterday lunchtime (chandler, monica and rachel, apparently!).
put them in last night at 9:30 and opened their house at 7 this morning. they have yet to venture out and i have not seen them eat or drink since they arrived.
is it usual for them to not eat etc while they settle in?
cant put anything in the house for them as they just panic and knock everything over!

Hi Freshers

First question has to be how old are they??
What were their living conditions before you got them ie the set up in a barn, free range where did they sleep etc...
Also quite important how used to people are they (suppose this all depends on the above :) )

What type of drinker are you using???

Try & find something heavy that they can't knock over (again this depends on their size), ducks can be quite jumpy especially if not used to people, they will calm down & adjust :)

Answers to the above questions will give us more of an idea  :D

they are 3 months old, have been living free range, not sure how used to humans they are and the drinker is a plastic gravity fed type, although they have a large water filled tray (6ftx2ft) in their enclosure.
i am waiting for a new house for them to arrive and they will then be free ranging in the garden whenever i am home

I think if the enclosure is attached tto their house it would be an idea to guide them out,

They really need to get some water & food

They will rush about nervously you will just have to be as calm as possible :)

What are you feeding them? Is it the same as what they were getting before? If it looks diffrent this can also put them off :)

Campbells are pretty nervous ducks. When I got my 3 white Campbells thay hid under a rosemary bush for about 3 days. Had to forcibly evict them back into their shed at night. They also didn't seem to eat and drink much but they did settle down and get used to their new environment. My dark campbells are also pretty twitchy. The cayuga and appleyard are much mosr chilled.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

it appears i have bought nocturnal ducks. they came out of their house when it got dark and spent 2 hours looking around their enclosure. saw them drinking and they appear to have taken some food.
they seem quite calm this morning, although they are still in the house. may evict them this afternoon just before i go work so they can potter around the enclosure when no-one is watching them.
have been feeding them a mixture of corn and layers as they were only fed layers before. put mostly layers in to start with so it looks familiar.
pics to follow later today

Lovely girls (from what I can see). I would definately evict them from the house during the day so they can get used to their new surroundings and find out that nothing terrible happens to them. As I said they are a very nervous breed and would think that they are coming out at night when they feel safer (they have much better night vision than chickens). Mine also like having parties on the lawn at night if I don't put them away

been getting better every day, they spend most of the day and night out of the house now. they all seem to be eating well and the neighbours all think they are great (mixture of the ducks being very quiet and me being a police officer! )
