Lettuce problem
« on: September 02, 2008, 11:08 »
So I planted these lettuce at the same time as my cucumbers and tomatoes.  The Cues and Toms are now doing extremely well, too well in fact, I am not ready to put them too ground yet but they seem more than ready.

Now look at my Lettuce??  It was this size when I transplanted it from the propagator to this tub, and they have done nothing.  Should I rip them out and start again?

When did you start them off.  I would have thought it was too late in the year for cucumbers and tomatoes to fruit now if only just planted out.  I know if you have too many lettuce ready at once you can dig some out and then plant again this stunts (if thats the right word) the growth or slows down the growing so you can pick later, maybe seedlings do the same.  I have transplanted lettuce seedlings that look like that for 3 weeks and then they suddenly take off.

Or are you saying you planted cues, toms and lettuce months ago.

I planted them all at the same time about 2 weeks ago now.  But my cucumbers and toms are more than 6inchs tall now, but the lettuce have done nothing at all :(

I'd wait and see about the lettuce.  I hope I'm wrong about you not getting any fruit from the cucumbers and toms at this time of the year.  Maybe someone with more knowledge will be along to help you soon.

the lettuce will probably make it if you perservere. Don't over water it though. It's best to water with the pot stood in a tray of water to let it suck it up frm the bottom rather than watering the top.  If it doesn't achieve full sized lettuce you can just harvest the leaves as and when you want them.

Always be guided by the instructions on the back of the seed packet as regards sowing times  :D
