Selling Veg and Plants at Carboot sales
« on: September 01, 2008, 17:23 »
I'm interested in selling some of my veg and plants at a car boot sale

Anybody do this ? Success ?

Would I need a licence to sell veg at a car boot or put a sign at the bottom of the lane or sell them to local shops ?

Any advice/help would be great

Thanks

I know quite a few people who sell fruit / veg/ flowers at carboot sales.
They never had a licence but i think you need to if plan to sell them at a shop.
I could be wrong though.

I was killing time in central Birmingham recently and found a huge allotment area called the Uplands, in the Handsworth area.  I went on a long walk round it and saw that a lot of the local Asian folk were plotholders, growing things in vast profusions like 10 courgette plants or a half-plot of chard which had all been cropped together.  It struck me that a lot of this would end up being sold at the local Asian shops - and good luck to them, a great idea and hardly any food miles.

I too want to sell my grown goodies, there is no way we can consume the amount that I planted!

Without a car, that makes car-boots a bit difficult, any other ideas are highly welcome!

Folks sell at the gate round my way too. I'm in a suburb that borders onto to a city and stuff at gate sales surprisingly doesn't seem to get nicked - not sure if they leave the honesty box on show tho!

As for car boots my experience of non-council run ones is that you can sell literally anything - can't see why you'd need any licence for these types of car boot.

Allotment Laws state that you cannot sell vegetables or plants from your plot! So i think doing that in a car boot would be a bad idea. What i do is give them away at work for small donations! Just "gave away" bunch carrots, 2 courgettes, bag of spuds, 3 beetroots, 2 handfulls of beans and some turnips and got £3 for it! Great for me for seeds, and they save tons on the supermarket prices and get fresh food!!!

If you dont have an allotment, then you can sell how you like i believe. When i was younger my dad used to sell his leftover veg to the local corner shop and made a small amount of cash!!

I have seen many people at our local boot sales selling plants and veg. not sure how well the veg sells, but I know I have seen many people walking aornd with the plants. Usually tom plants 4 for £1, bean plants 6 for £1 at the moment brassicas are going at 6 for £1 or 12 for £1.50 I bought some spring greens as I didn't have any seeds.
