Are you sure it's not rods or poles.

A "Standard" allotment is 10 rods.    (If you can say there is a standard allotment)

Maybe yours is a half plot.

5 poles is half a standard plot - a good size to start off with. Take a tape measure and measure it up - in my experience they're not always what they seem (mine is about 7 poles I think).
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

So with my maths head on one rod is 6x9 ft,

Did my awsome maths skills get it right?

A rod, pole or perch, was the distance from the front of a plough ox's nose to the place where the farmer stood on the back of the plough, and was reckoned to be 5.5 yards. It was also known as  a 'land yard', and still is here in Lincolnshire.

A Pole is a unit of length AND a unit of area - you dont get 'square poles'. So it 5.5 x 5.5 yards, = 30.25 square yards.

30' x 45' is 10 yards x 15 yards = 150 square yards/30.25 = 4.95 poles

My plot is 525 sq yds = 17 poles.

No, you've been diddled out of 0.05 poles, which is 13 square feet.........imagine a square 3 feet 7 inches by 3 feet 7 inches.

31' x 33' = 10.3 yards x 11 yards = 110 sq yards / 30.25 = 3.63 poles

28' x etc = 3.39 poles

26' x etc = 3.15 poles

24' x etc = 2.9 poles

21' x etc = 2.54 poles

Total = 15.61 poles

slightly under my 17 poles plot in size :tongue2: or the same size as some third world countries.

I think that is a half plot 5 poles.

If I remember mine is 26m x 7m

26m x 7m =  28.34 yards x 7.63 yards = 216.23 sq yds = 7.14 poles

so 13m x 7m = 3.57 poles.

10 poles was supposed to be the area of land you need to grow enough veg for a family of 4.
