 watering veg of any kind or all kinds, how often every day or two days or just as i think is necessary for the state of soil the drainage on my plot is reasonable. have just planted some winter veg should they be needing water in the cold snaps too?

Hi alandkell,

I'd say that if your plot drains away reasonably (ie the water doesn't pool up for long periods of time and doesn't dry up as soon as it stops raining) then you should only need to water in periods of drought.

Plants take what they need from the soil, and it's surprisingly damp / moist a foot or so under the surface so I'd recommend not watering unless you really have to, unless you have a seedbed, in which case keep a water butt nearby to keep the seedlings moist to aid germination.

Are you planning on using a local mains supply or collecting your own?

a bit of both on the way we get water as our mains is not that great on pressure and filling the can tires my feet.

Some veg needs a copious amount of water and others don't, as Snoozie says.

Winter veg shall be near flooded most of it's life, so no concerns there, really.

Puddle in on planting and water every other day in dry weather if and untill  it stops looking floppy.

No, I didn't have much success at this and yes, they should be just fine, earthed up, other than frost, slugs, cold and blight. Good luck though. :D

when did you plant them?

I put some in last year in September and when the first frosts hit on 10th October (I remember it well   ) the haulms were all killed off by frosts and the spuds didn't get past marble size!

Oh well, we live and learn

definately cover them with a cloche or fleece or something - that's what I did wrong last year.  Good job I planted so many really otherwise there wouldn't have been enough tater tots for Christmas dinner!
