Not a stupid question CM, but I don't think any of us on here water our chitting potatoes.  But someone did read on the internet somewhere that you should, but we can't think why.  Surely they would rot if they just sat there watered???

anyway, just make sure they are somewhere where they won't get frostbite!!  Hope you have a good crop!!!

There are never any stupid questions charliesmum, only stupid answers! I don't water mine, and nor does anyone else I know, nor have I come across any references to watering in books. But if you were to ask 'WHY don't you water your chitting spuds' I'd be stumped for an answer!    :D

I don't water them.

As far as i understand it the little seed potatoes have what they need to get going until you pop them in the ground.

I would've thought that they would rot if you sprayed them with water or feed.   I've not been brave enough to try watering them but i've done ok without.

I sprayed with seaweed solution but I can't say I noticed any difference from doing it.

I did that to mine - gave me something to do while waiting for spring.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Is there a minumum size for seed spuds - most of my Desiree ones are sort of hen's egg sized, and I put them on the windowsill to chit today - but I do have some that are only large marble sized - will they have enough resources to grow into much, or shall I have them for tea instead?

Generally the bigger seed potatoes esult in better crops, large marbles I doubt they worth the bother.

The last thing you want to do is wet the potatoes while they are unplanted. All this would do is encourage rot. These spuds are doomed to wither and die and no amount of water will change that. Keep your chitted spuds in good light and cool but frost-free until planting time.

Marble-sized spuds will at best produce a few more marbles or maybe one or two egg-sized spuds for the same space and effort as a proper size start.
