heron fright
« on: August 21, 2008, 20:56 »
Went out tonight at 8 to get the girls in, and couldn't find Conny, who is always the last one to go to bed.  Looked all over the garden, shaking my little tub of mealworms (they're all mad about them and usually come flying to me if I only show them the tub), getting very worried indeed.
Anthony (hubbie) came out to help me look for her, and said he'd just seen a heron just outside our garden fence.  He also told me that he once saw a photo of a heron with a pidgeon in his beak...  Then we lifted the roof off the hen hutch just to make sure, and there she was, already in bed!  We think that she might have got such a fright with the heron being around that she took refuge in the hutch.

Anyone ever heard of a heron taking off with a fully grown hen??
