Would like any advice please!

a friend said I need to buy the glass tubes to put over them to keep them straight and small - is this true?

What luck have people had in the past?

Never heard about glass tubes over pickling gherkins. Maybe to grow perfect ones for the WI gherkin competition.

I grew two plants last year and had more than enough. Gave loads away as well. I would trellis them though. It helps with the picking and take up less space.

Planted the seeds in pots at home and when big enough took them to the allotment.  Each one were planted in a seperate hole filled with manure. Round each plant I build a little 'dam' to keep the water in when watering. I also mulch around the plant to keep weeds away and the soil damp.

When they were still young, aphids appeared. Just rubbed them off till the ladybirds took over.
