2 burn or not 2 burn.......?
« on: August 18, 2008, 20:54 »
I read on another site that the 'haulm' from my potatoes once pulled should be burned?

I have previously added this material to my compost heap.

Is that a bad thing to do?

most people suggest burning them if affected by blight, if they aren't they will be fine on the heap, as long as you have removed even the tiny potatoes.  even if they have blight some people will still out them on the compost heap so i shouldn't worry.

Little point in burning potato haulms IMHO blight overwinters in the tubers not the stalk and leaf, & blight spores have a very limited viability about 10 days in the soil, Like lucywil says remove all the tubers before composting.
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

Interestingly this article indicates that the spores can over winter using leaf debris so important to remove

Yes thats is interesting I was always led to believe that blight over winters in infected tubers, it could be that it's just the early blight they are referring to and also the climate is warmer in California.

The RHS  indicate that the greatest risk of reinfection of blight is from tubers and to remove any infected ones before replanting and not to leave on the edge of the plot.

Worth bearing in mind senrab_nhoj thanks for the link  :D

I never compost any potato parts just in case.

I've been told that the council heaps get that hot they kill just about everything so I send my stuff to the tip.
