Weather worries
« on: February 01, 2007, 16:23 »
Is anyone else worried about the weird winter weather?. I had a bumble bee fly into my kitchen during winter soltice week, daffodils in flower in my area, even osteospermums blooming in my garden. However my main concern is my strawberries, which have been flowering on and off all autumn/winter, will they have any strength left to produce a good crop at the right time. This is of the utmost importance as I have promised The Supreme Commander a bumper crop this (2nd) year.
When the weather changes I shall ....

I have been wondering whether my plants that have flowered out of season will do so again in the summer.

Still got a tender annual flowering in my front garden, and a couple of trailing geraniums in a window box trying to flower.

Not so much 'worried' as 'curious'....I'll just try and carry on as always and see what works..... 8)

Have you planted up some of your strawberry runners? It keeps your bed developing.
I gave mine quite a fierce haircut in the autumn and it seemed to take their mind off flowering - but the plants look really healthy now. Maybe you should cut the flowers off
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Apparently its el nino year, so hotter than last potentially (60% chance according to met office).  We've also had unusual winds for the year blowing.  They usually blow from the north or north east at this time of year.

Thanks for your replies, as this does not seem very common it may be I have over cosseted my strawberries. They are in a heavily manured and gritted bed, planted on ridges, through black fabric, all designed to drain and warm my heavy clay soil. Too much of a good thing??. I even forced myself to remove the flowers  from some of the plants last year, like all the books tell you to in the first year, but no-one does.

Noshed, I have a few  potted up runners that are destined for the greenhouse to force an early crop and interestingly these have not flowered. The plan is to use this years runners to create a new bed later this year. I shall continue to remove any flowers and although it goes against the grain I shall, by way of a trial, give half the plants a severe haircut and see what happens.

We too have a frost this morning just a mild one though :D

Just saw an ad for Springwatch survey where you are asked to report the first signs of spring, i think they are going to get some very surprising results this year.
