What can I plant NOW?
« on: August 14, 2008, 01:01 »
After a reasonably successful first 6 months with a plot I am wondering if there are any vegetables that can be planted now (Aug) for either cropping later this year or in the new year.  Any advice would be welcome

If yopu can find some over wintering cauliflower plants or spring greens. They can go in now.

I planted out calabrese Samson the other day, which I'd grown from seed. Cavolo varieties can be planted out too.

Spring cabbage, chinese cabbage, hardy lettuces and the winter version spring onions can be sown now, as can kohl rabi and turnip

Hardy kales and caulis can be planted

I like to grow spinach over winter and carrots.  Spinach Bordeaux is sown in September and makes welcome stir fries and curries come spring. if you keep slugs off it  :D

Garlics, shallots and onion sets should be in the shops soon and they get planted out in October time so you could plan for those. The various websites will give you the information (eg fothergills and Marshalls etc) Then when you've swotted up you can pay Wilko a visit as they usually stock a good range, but  cheaper  :D
