Potato harvest
« on: August 11, 2008, 11:19 »
Hi

Decided to dig some of our mains (desiree) at the weekend, needed some spuds for roasting and foilage has started to die back so thought what have we got to loose.

Well dug up some to find the slugs had been after one or two so decided to dig a whole row (9.5ft) we got 35lb of potatoes we couldn't believe it and we've got 4 more rows to dig.

Others need digging to stop slugs having a feast but flip me - all those potatoes and there are only 3 of us, bearing in mind we use about 4 to 5lb of pots a week I think we will be giving a fair amount away.

Just goes to show what some hard work, plenty of horse manure and lots of rain can do.

Plus they taste excellent both as roasted and chips - how chuffed are we.  :D

cheers

we dug some of our desiree at the week-end, no slug damage
but very scabby, fine inside but not very nice to look at,
have been told it's because the ground is new..field last year.
but hey the scab peels off nice spud inside   :)

I have grown Desiree this year and I harvested the 1 row I did and it filled my wheelbarrow.
All I need to do now is transfer them into a Hessian sack for use and storage and I will be set.
Next year I am doing 2 rows of these blinkers

Dug up some of me Desiree yesterday.  Great spuds!  Except the largest which would have been a lovely jacket got sliced with the spade by mistake.  Never mind we had some beaut roasties for dinner.  Fortunately so far so good. No slug damage or scabby bits.  :)
Everyday is the dawn of a new error...

Has anything gone well for you this year?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
