Soft Fruit
« on: August 10, 2008, 11:54 »
OK, so the airline is running OK for a few hours, and my thoughts have drifted to the allotment.
I'm planning to change my soft fruit bed a little bit now that the raspberries have finished....this leads to a number of questions:

1) Is now the right time to move Summer fruting raspberry canes ? (I have too many and am looking to offload some)
2) Whats the best way to prune a blackcurrant bush which has never been done before...well, at least since I've had the plot (2 1/2 years)
3) Same as Q2 but for redcurrants.
4) Am I too late to "peg-in" strawberry runners ?

Thanks guys

I'll give it a crack - with a bit of help for Q3!

1 - Now!
2 - Cut out all dead wood & low growing branches, along with any really old wood. Thin out about 1/3 of the remainder.
3 - Best have a look at this as red currants are more complicated than black currants!

4 - No!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yes, you can move raspberry canes now. Be sure to water them well first if it hasn't rained lately. Best way is to make sure there's still soil attached to the roots and they'll have good success.

Not too late to peg strawberries. If they've started rooting, then do as above - dig up some soil with the roots and move where desired.

Red currants fruit on 2nd yr canes so if the cane is green, that's next year's fruiter. If the cane is brownish, out it comes.

Black currants fruit on canes that are older than 2 yrs but up to 4 yrs old. But if the cane is very dark, prune it out as it's too old and doesn't bear much.

Now is the time to manure all the soft fruits for next year's crop.
