keeping a cock...
« on: August 08, 2008, 21:22 »
OK...I'm beginning to come round to the idea that my hen...is a cock  :(

So...trying to work out if I can keep him

What are the issues with keeping a cock, and only 1!, with hens? Can you still eat the hens eggs? Do I have to check if they've been fertilised etc? Will his call get louder??

Advice needed....or he may well be going  :(  :(  :(

His call may get louder but there is no problem re eggs. The egg farmer up the road from me says that fertilised eggs have a longer shelf life and for this reason they always keep cocks. I think the ratio is 1 cock per 12 hens. I think you should keep him if the neighbours are ok with it. There is nothing like a young healthy cock about the place
I wouldnt be without Handsome
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

I have loads of cockerels and love em! They are a pleasure to watch feeding and fussing over their hens, as long as there are enough girls to keep him happy -if you know what I mean  They are also good at sorting out bickering as naturally will be top bird

I wouldnt be without my Monty at all. He is a real character, and the girls really love him. He calls to the other cockerel down the road, and then gets a reply. Im lucky 'cos I live in the country, but I have neighbours who love him as much as I do, although I think they are eyeing him up for a huge portion of coq au vin

Mine calls to the other cocks around here (4of 'em), he calls the girls to their food and won't eat until they do BUT he keeps attacking my children. I have warned him that several kinds of fate await him (one being the roasting tin!) but he won't stop.
