My friend (fellow chicken keeper) has had a look at my chook shimmer and reckons she's egg bound... have her sat over a pan of steaming water for last half hour and she seems to have pushed it down to almost her vent.. definately trying to push - too much info but her vent is kind of 'winking' if you know what i mean.

Just thought i'd ask you.. urgently for any advice, I can and am happy to try all night if I have to.. she's not looking great but happy to be helped i think.

Thanks for any help you can offer..

How wonderfully put Vembs, sorry in bad taste but it made me laugh.
Oil seems the way to go tho Porffor from what I have read in the past. Good luck :)
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

Thanks :) both - i did laugh also! lol

I've done the 'deed' of the oil with a baby syringe for meds, She's tucked up eating some corn in a cardboard box for the night, still standing up so hopefully she's 'working on it'. She's lost a lot of weight and was beginning to think there was no hope. Fingers tightly x'd she makes it. At least it's lower now.

Have you any dispersible calcium you could give her as well? this will help her muscles push the egg out. Perhaps a little cheese which is high in calcium might help.
Good luck with her sounds like its almost there!

nor weekly, monthly or annually I hope! ahh well if it saves her i'll be a happy bunny and she'll be a happy chook. :) she's my fav - but don't tell the other one (who lays everyday regular as clockwork). Shimmer (egg bound chook) has always been irratic at laying but she's a fiesty girl :) charges at the gate when she's fit n' well  pecks your feet if she's being really friendly!  8)

No movement overnight..  :? thinking of keeping shimmer in the house with food and water - big enough for her to roam around if she feels like it but won't have to endure the weather or Buffy jumping on her... I'll keep an eye on her though and maybe try the water later..

not 100% sure on this, but it's worth a go.

Any other advice?

Can you feel an egg???

if you go from bottom down towards her legs with your hand, if she is egg bound you should be able to feel it???

Is she carrying on as normal otherwise ???

I have limestone flour.. would that be ok? Can give cheese, grated best do you think? or let her peck a block?
sorry didn't answer earlier only just noticed your post.
