Broody Hens - Advice about about them
« on: August 07, 2008, 11:08 »
I bought my 3 hens POL back in may. They've done me well and are now laying a egg a day each which i'm very happy with. However i would -love- the chance to get some chicks naturally and i was wondering how to entice a chicken to become broody and what are the chances of one of mine becoming broody. I have a Amberlink, Black Comet & an ISA brown (it's a Long Island Red cross i think)

Yeah well... i want to get only 2 more chickens. Getting another purposely for it going broody (therefore not getting a chick but a full grown chicken) rather defeats the purpose. I only have room in my garden for a possible increase from 3 to 6 and then i would have to build a new coop from scratch. Which wouldn't be a problem seeing as i have a timber merchant over the road from which i can acquire as many pallets and off cuts of wood as i would need. FREE!

That's so not fair I'd love some pallets :(

Getting them up the single track is a huge problem

As for chickens my sussex make great mum's and when they're not broody you get a fair few eggs unlike the silkies which i don't thonk give as many?

What about waiting till next year and seeing if any of your girls go broody. Would have thought it was a bit late to be settling in a new girl and for her to go broody and to hatch eggs. Also that way more room for more chicks
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Cockerels. What you gonna do if you get some ?

It's the single biggest problem of hatching your own eggs, unless you're somewhere where it doesn't matter.

Sorry to say that if i don't find any homes for potential cockerels they'll be going choppy chop for dinner when they are old enough and start to doodle.

But duck is so much nicer than chicken and you would never need to get a nasty, noisy cockerel :D
