UPDATED...PROBLEM.....HELP
« on: August 07, 2008, 08:10 »
Mornin, well I cant believe that a 3rd little Buff Orpy chick is looking unwell. So, Bertha who I had for about 6 weeks suddenly looked hunched, ate and drank for a few days, by which time I tried giving her some anticoccicidial intestinal antibiotics but she died anyway. Then as you know last week after 3 days of nursing I lost another one. She came from the same lady but was a different batch and younger. Now another one, same batch as last one, but bigger.
SYMPTOMS

Hunched back, thats all looks hunched but eats and drinks, moves around slowly.
What do you reckon, I haven't  frontlined the chicks and Bertha did have a few little crawlies on her. Would she have died of a few crawlies? I only saw one or two, I went into panic mode but I havent seen any scratching going on in the coop at all.
Oh and dont ask me to ask the breeder, I is in France, if its ill kill it :(
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

There's so many things it could be.

As the chick is eating and drinking what are the poos like, diarrhea, blood, urates.

Antibiotics may help, if that is a route available to you.

Jelly, I think that the red mite might be a bit of a red herring and that you might have something else wrong with your chickens. Its only an  extremely heavy infestation of crawlies that lead to death of a chicken. They are parasites and its not really in their interests to kill their hosts.

Absolutely Bodger.  It's an infection problem in my (very limited) opinion.

Hello Jelly,

Not been on here for a while...we've an alpaca baby that's keeping us occupied...it arrived a month   before we expected her but doing fine so far. :)

Your problem...so sorry that youi're losing the chicks.   Gamm-Vert stock a range of tonic type stuff you might try. There's a tummy one, a respiratory one, etc etc. I use them from time to time if my girlies look down and they seem to do the trick. Hesitate to suggest anything else as you've probably tried the usual stuff...clean everything with Poultryshield or the like, up the cider vinegar, give yogart and healthy treats.

Fingers crossed that the others survive, the bigger they get the better their chances.

Finally got some rain this evening, after months with hardly a drop...at last, everything is so dry and the grass is all brown..what's it like where you are? :)

I think it sounds like cocci - are they on medicated feed?  I lost two chicks to this a few weeks back.  Med feed saved the rest.
