Grape tips
« on: August 03, 2008, 12:14 »
I've found a grape vine in the overgrown area behind the shed !

I've removed all the bindweed growing in it but are there any generic tips for taking care of the grape vine?  Should I feed it with something?

I don't know what variety it is - how would I be able to tell?

Many thanks!

It probably has grown there because a bird has dropped a seed.  See if you can find out if anybody nearby has got one,  if so its probably the same variety.  Grape vines are fairly easy, but they do like a good feed one or twice a year.  The hard work is thinning out the bunches later if you want nice big grapes.  After cutting down the quantity to about half, I then thin the actual amount of grapes out on the remaining bunches to give them room to swell out and get nice and fat.  It will be exciting to see what it turns out to be.  Good luck.  Mrs Bouquet.

thanks mrs bouquet. What should i feed it with? I have blood, fish and bone will that be any good? It only has 6 or so little bunches on it but is quite big - some growing on top of the shed.

I'll try and post pictures if the bunches mature :)

I use pelleted chicken manure, which I dissolve in a watering can and pour on.  Be careful of fish, blood and bone especially if your plant is quite new and soft at the base, as it can burn soft wood stems if it makes contact and may kill it.   The base of the trunk of mine is about 10ins round and lovely and knarled looking, but ! planted it about 20 years ago.

We've had a grape vine for three years now, it's very rampant and have given it several 'haircuts'.  We still haven't had any grapes from it at all.  All it wants to do is take over the garden like one of those russian vine thingies.  Thanks for the site quoted, will try that.

Years and years ago my mum gave me a vine for Easter (had decided I didn't want chocolate - don't worry, I've got over that). It was planted by the front door and spread over the whole side of the house. It did take about 10 years to spread over two sides of the house and start fruiting. Really sadly she had to downsize and sell up. The estate agent estimated it added 5 grand to the house
Have planted one here and estimating that it currently adds about £3.50 to the value of my house! Will be keeping an eye on developments but the duck muck seems to be doing it good.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
