Newbie question re potatoes
« on: July 31, 2008, 17:52 »
I have grown a few early spuds in bags this year and had about pound and a half per plant.

What I don't understand is that though they are effectively earthed up nearly 3 feet, all the crop was right down at the bottom of the sack.

I thought that tubers grew out in the earthed up part.

Am I doing something wrong?

Newbie question re potatoes

I am a newbie and *NOT* having read the instructions I put my tatoes in about two inches down.

On being told the error of my ways, I hurriedly built up the furrows afterwards (only to have them wash back down again as our soil is so sandy!)

The second batch i buried properly but it doesn't seem to make any difference they are still only 6" down or so.

I know this doesn't help you much, but I think potatoes do their own thing.

I read in a Quaker book that 200 years ago there was great discussion about whether to grow potatoes in deep furrows or to grow 'lazy' potatoes.

This one will run and run!
I get my kicks on Plot 66!
