MAjor help needed ?
« on: July 27, 2008, 10:37 »
Hello all i am 25 yrs old and  i turned to gardening this year without the results i expected. I love to cook and so would love to grow all herbs , chillis and root  veg.

Do you have any tips  about when  to put the plants in  , how to look after them etc. I am a complete novice.

I was thinking of growing the herbs and chillis and pots and  the root veg in a plot allocated to me.

The only prob is  the  plot is very pebbley and has been used to grow much for years.

I hope you can help.

I find this site quite useful as it tells you what to do each week.

If nothing else its a good starter.

Hi Nicklord1 (can we just call you nick??)

welcome to the forums.

Probably the best way to start is to do a search using the search facility on this forun for the individual crop or issue that you have because it's probably been asked before and it will save you time in the long run as you can read everyone's responses there an then.

If that still doesn't yeild the answer you need then post your question in the Grow Your Own section and you'll soon have a host of different answers to pick from!

Hope this helps,  Su  :D

Hi from me too Nick!  I have our own John Harrison's book Veg growing month by month, which is great from newbie to more expert growers, and I have the old version of Dr Hessayon's veg and herb growing.  also look on here for lots more info, and just keep reading these pages!!!

hi if you can get hold of any perenial herbs i.e thyme, oregano, french tarragon ,marjoram, then get them in .
the pebble in your  soil will need to be raked out as much as possible for carrots etc.
funny enough some of your herbs would do quite fine in that kind of soil.
lovage, fennel are to big for a pot so will have to go in the veg patch.
leave chillis and annual herbs till next year

I know what you're getting at, but why do that when you can ask first & learn by other's mistakes without going through the painful process yourself?

I'm with Daz on this one DD.

As long as folks aren't doing stuff that is harmfull or detrimental then I think it's good to make the mistake in the first place and then next time round you'll remember why not to, not just that someone did it that way one time and it didn't work.

This is my second year and last year I made so many mistakes that this year everything is coming up great!!  :D

ye im all for reading loads and loads of info but i find that unless i get out there and do what ive read i forget it and with all the contradictory info there is on the web its also best to try and then learn cause just cause you read something dnt make it the best or right way for you

aswell as planting loads and learning from my mistakes im also learning from here and other sites but i also find if you read all you can 1st you end up filling your head with loads of rubbish that dont apply to your own sistuation so instead of try try and try again i say try and if you get it wrong come on somewhere like here and find a way you think will suit you so altho you are still learning from your mistakes your mistakes your not making as many mistakes as someone that leanrs completly on their own and there ends up being more leanring than mistakes

ive got loads of ideas and knowledge for my garden next year and as this years been more weeding than anything else next yuear should be alot quieter on the weed front

i tried to grow garlic this year using knowledge i gained from one place and that said to plant in febuary as its the best time to do it and they all failed and have since found october time is the best
