They are little seed pods and are poisonous, so get rid!  Someone on here, (was it Noshed?) said she'd planted some and got a few plants from them, but when i tried it they didn't grow!

oh, sorry, hi Lady plod!!!!!

Yeah, like Grannie says they are very poisonous. You can plant them and see if you get any plants. This is how new variety's of spuds appear. You might as well try if you have a pot spare, you've got nothing to lose.

Ah, thank you for that Grannie Annie!

Does it mean the tatties underneath are ready now then? Please don't ask what type they are........ I'm on a steep learning curve here and one of many things I've learned this year is to label stuff!

Can I throw the little balls on the compost?

LP

You can probably throw your little balls on the compst, they won't be posonous by the time the compost is ready, its just that you may be growing a few more potatoes!!!!!

Like Lincsy said, why not chuck them in a pot of soil and see if anything grows???

Hi Mike,

Might I get potatoes from them next year then?

And while we are on the subject, I suppose I can save a few potatoes that I dig up for planting next time, can I?

I like the idea of collecting seed and stuff from this year's crops for next year, but would they be as reliable as the seeds you get in packets???

LP

Depends what plants they are. If they are F1 hybrids (should say on the packet) they won't be the same next year. Yes you can save some potatoes for next year all you have to do is 'chit' them off to start them off. If you can save seeds, by all means do you never know. I'm not sure about this aspect of gardening, but i am sure an expert on it will be on here.

Yeah, you'll get some potatoes from the 'tomatoes' but I would definitely pot them not plant them in the ground myself. What type are they growing on?

Hi Mike,

Don't know what sort of poatato they are cos I didn't label them (new to this game!) but I think they are main crop not earlies.

If they have gone to seed will they be OK underneath? Should I dig them up now or leave them to carry on growing once I've de-balled them?

LP

The potatoes underneath should be fine LP!  and yes, I agree with FCG, plant some of the seed balls in a pot, and try to keep a few of your proper potatoe for next year.  Don't do it every year though as that's the way diseases spread, and you'll need to keep your potatoes for next yer very cool, or they'll rot.  I think someone said keep in fridge!!   But I've never bothered!!
