Transplanting Swede's Or Not ?
« on: July 25, 2008, 09:30 »
I got a a few Swedes off a mate who started them off in small pots in the greenhouse, Ive now transplanted them into the soil and they seem ok...

So, ive started around 100 Swedes off in the greenhouse in pots for transplanting in a week or two,..

Has anyone else had success transplanting Swede's ?

i do, i always start them off in trays usually in my greenhouse but they don't need to be in there especially at this time of year, i usually start them in march and and plant out in may, i have just picked my first one this year and its a decent size, not sure if you have left it too late but you may get some small ones

Not knowing any better, I started off turnips and swedes in the GH and transplanted them, then read that you shouldn't, must be planted in situi.  The story of the farmer's wife and the giant swede sprang to mind after about three months and I must have looked like a turnip at the end of the year.

hi , we did the same . planted into plastic cups then transplanted into cup size holes , everything is ok here in hull , the swedes dont like their roots disturbed, cant see the problem if the roots are not disturbed

Did you take them off the cups or were the cups the degradable kind?

I transplant swedes when the rough leaf is on the plant.I do this when I am thinning them out. These are grown outside in drills from seed. The ones I transplant are usually a lot smaller than the others but are still usable at the end of the year.

I started mine off in the GH (not knowing any better) and transplanted to where they will grow on and I'm not having any trouble so far...  will see when it's time to harvest them!

Ive been sowing swedes in pots and planting out into the garden  for years, much easyer than sowing direct and having to thin them out.
