possible bumblefoot - advice
« on: July 18, 2008, 19:20 »
Looking through my poultry mags, I think I have a chicken with bumblefoot. She has been limping on one leg for a few days, and the foot and leg are warm to the touch, with a swelling on the underneath of the foot. The info I read said there may be a dark spot in the centre of the swelling, which there isn't on this one. Treatment was to remove pus, apply antiseptic and bandage. How do i get the pus out? Is it a case of sticking a needle or something in it, as gently squeezing the lump doesn't seem to do anything. Could I just give antibiotics and hope it clears up. Advice please!

I've not had to treat bumble foot but there's bound to be someone here who has.  I think antibiotics WILL be needed as well as removing the puss !

These might help:

Do rule out arthritis too !

If there as a fluctuant area of pus then antibiotics by themselves will not cure it. Needs cold hard steel to lance it. The black spot tends to arrive late from what I understand (it is because the skin over the abscess has died). Never had it myself but my gran's pheasant had it
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

its caused usually by heavy birds jumping off perches that are to high put a deep bed of clean bedding down / straw  is best it may also have scraped its foot and infection go in its called staphylococcal when they get pus in .clean the foot completly with warm salty water .lok for a pus spot .lance it with a modellers knife ... scalpel ... squeeze out the pus if ur able or just tease out the head with the scalpel point or cotton buds .,put some salt on it for a minute or 2 then rinze off ,dry well apply germolene 2 times a day on a fabric plaster .wrap the foot up as best you with more plaster strip ( only where the bad stuff is )cleaning the wound each time you redress it as before ,make sure the bedding is clean where it is .you may make the infection go but the swollen bit often stays . lower the perches by 6 inches if they are high
still alive /............

One of my Pekins had developed a slight limp and then (along with all the others!) went broody. After sitting in a nest box for a few weeks (can't get them off being broody) she now has become almost completely one legged, holding the offending leg right up by her chest and showing no signs of wanting to use it. I've been lucky never to have had a poorly hen before, so no experience there to call on. Sounds a bit like the Bumblefoot you mention, but not sure. Any suggestions as to what it might be and how I might deal with it? All advice gratefully received!
