The tatties i recently dug up and washed have started to go soft where the skin rubbed off whilst washing.  How can i combat this problem. should i have left them out to dry off in the sun for a bit   :?

Wash them just before you want to use them!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hi

We're new to this but my understanding and what we have done is lifted some and dried them - not washed them and put them in the sacks with earth on them.

There was a post on here that says that new potatoes do not store as well as mains, some say up to a month, due to how thin the skins are so not to lift too many any any one time.

What we have done is lifed some and stored them and left 2 more rows in the ground and removed the foliage to stop them getting any bigger (they are big enough for new potatoes) apparently they store much better in the ground.

It's all trial and error for us this year and we are going to store a few potatoes in sacks in the best conditions we have available to us and see how long they last for.

cheers

What variety are they, Jack? You really need what is termed a 'main crop' variety for long term storage.

As willnbirdie says, if this is what's happening to them, store them muck an' all!
