Wow - potatoes
« on: July 13, 2008, 18:16 »
Hi

Yesterday we went and dug some of our earlies took out 2 rows keeping 2 in the ground for 2 to 3 weeks.  We are growing pentland javelin and I know they are meant to crop heavy but from two 8.5 ft rows we harvested 31lbs of potatoes.

Sizes vary - some larger ones, a few a little too large really but lots and lots of perfect size new potatoes - how pleased are we.    :)  There are only 3 of us in our house (one who is only 3 years old) so we had great pleasure in giving some away yesterday - what a fantastic feeling.  The hard work is now starting to pay off and we are just so chuffed it's really quite exciting.

the 2 remaining rows, we took some advice on here and have cut the foliage off to stop them getting any bigger and when ready we will dig a few at a time.

cheers

Can I ask where you got Pentland Javelin from please, seeing as Sunderland is not too far away from me.  I dug up a row of earlies recently but didn't get anywhere near that amount.  Mine were Maris Piper which I got from B & Q

Hi durham-lass

We got our p-j from the lottie shop on site - I have seen them for sale on the internet but I guess some of the local nurseries would sell them too.

Cheers
