Quick couple of potatoe questions
« on: July 07, 2008, 12:30 »
Hi

I've just dug up some 1st earlies, Maris Bard.  On some, they had watery purple 'stains', these easily rubbed off.  Anything to worry about?

Also, is it common for the potatoes to get mixed up, at source?  The reason I ask is that one of my plants, what I thought to be Maris Bard, produced a few red potatoes.

Thanks

Lee

Don't know either, really. First one, if the tuber look healthy inside, would not worry if there is some pinkish line inside that turns brown once cut, that might be pink rot.

I've had a closer look, and the pink/purple has not got into the tuber, it sort of comes off with the skin.

In our first year a couple of years ago we planted 4 rows of Desiree which are red. When we dug them up we had 2 rows of red and 2 rows of white.  :?
OH insisted I must have muddled them up but none of the other potatoes we dug up were red and I had meticulously written down what was planted where.

That is not a red potato though, if it's healthy inside it's just a white one with colour markings, hopefully.

Oopps, just re-read my post and realised it looked as though I was saying the potato in the photo is one of the red ones.  What I mean, was, that the photo is if one of the ones with the pink on it, Maris Bard.

Cheers

Well, I don't know of anything sinister that looks like that - which means nothing - rather seems to be a skin colorations, especially if it comes of with the skin. Another rogue one, as I think MB is plain as can be.

What you need is to borrow my two year old daughter, my seed spuds were all sitting in the conservatory happily chitting and along she came and had a good game of "lets mix all daddys spuds up"
Still its a nice surprise when you dig up a plant as you never know what you are going to get
