Hello I was wondering if any of you have tried and recommend Winter Hardy Perrenial  Everlasing Sweet Peas? as opposed to the Hardy Annual

Sweet Peas I notice that even Thompson & Morgan seedsmen don't stock them?

Thanks,

Samantha

I'm sure they used to sell one type of everlasting pea seeds. But someone will do on the big web. They can get very big, depending which one you get, and of course, you will have one colour.

The one I have - forgot the name of it - is rather pretty but does not set seed normally in the UK, so it's from root cuttings. Might be worth looking for plants in specialist nurseries.

I've grown both and while it's nice that the perenial looks after itself, it seems to put out far more greenery than flowers which are limited in colour and very faint scent. Give me the annuals any day for their colour variety and heady fragrance. True, its extra work but really worth starting the annuals.

Yes from the picture of the Sweet Peas you posted  those Everlasting Ones
look less elegant  than the Regular Annuals but them then again they look after themselves

You say there not as fragrant too and too leafy less flowers well you cannot have it all.

Samantha

you could grow one for the garden, nice colour and quite vigorous but for cut flowers with fab perfume you can't beat the annuals.  I only grow the fragrant ones  :D

I feel all this is turning out to be a bit of a silly generalisation of something, which does not exist.

Everlasting or perennial sweet pea is not one species, there are a few, and within that there are also some variations.

They will differ in flower colour, leaf shape, growth habit and size, some are evergreen, others are not, some are little some huge, some climb others don't, some beautifully scented, others are not, some not suited to UK climate well, so won't be surprised looking bad in Scotland.

All have lovely flowers as far as I'm concerned. But then I'm also keen on simple , old varieties and species in annuals. And that is not just a taste thing, they seem to be much more resistant to powdery mildew, which can render your sweet pea display to an eye-sore with some modern, blousy f1 things, easily.

It did kill the thread for 4 days didn't it?

We've got some that we 'liberated' from Castle Cornet on Guernsey, (nicked a few seed pods). Make a good reminder of the hols.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
