Ants on my cherry tree

I was checking over my cherry tree and noticed something a little odd.

A few of the leaves are curled up and have clusters of little black spots on the underneath, presumably eggs of some sort?
Anyway, there's ants climbing up the tree to "eggs" not sure if they're "eating" them or planting them there.

So, presumably theres a problem, are the ants the cause or the solution?

They could be tiny black aphids, ants will farm aphids for the sweet waste matter they produce.

ah nice one richy that sounds like exactly what is happening to my blackcurrant bushes.
will it be a problem for the fruit of them..

The aphids will weaken the plant to a degree so you will get less fruit, if there's too much stress the plant may drop all its fruit :evil:
