Probably the best way is to buy a tomato fertiliser and it will tell you on the packet how often to feed for all situations.

I swear by blood and bone or bonemeal.  It is organic and slow acting so releases a regular supply of nutrients to the tomato plants.  It is relatively inexpensive Down Under.  There is a wide variety of quality though.  It should be a fine powder, so to check the quality pass it thru a sieve.  The very best will pass straight thru, the poorer quality ones will have bits that are left behind.  One brand that I tried last season had blue metal in it!!!

Any really, all will say how much and how often. Even can use the contents of your hoover bag.

Avoid one thing though, fishy tasting toms are rather disgusting.

Hey gobs, is that because I'm feeding my toms with the contents of my fish tank?  :D , or at least once it stops raining for 5 mins I might! My toms are all outdoors.

The contents of your hoover ?????  :o , you're joking right?

No, not joking.

The fishiness, I shall never know for 100% as it wasn't my own tomatoes but that's the one sensible reason to me for their flavour, fish fertiliser.

I usually put the hoover contents in my compost bin. So basically you're saying put a handful (for argument's sake) of hoover dust where I would normally pour tom feed fortnightly?
Anyone else used hoover dust to feed plants? I'm amazed gobs  :o

It's not that diff from blood and bone if you think about it, it has trace elements and is full of animal waste, like bits of skin, hair, not going in further details, you get the picture. You can mulch with it around the plants.

I think in the average household nowadays the hoover bag will contain more synthetic fibre fluff than anything else but there might be some value in adding inert fibre to the soil.

gosh - fluff, I never knwe it was valuable!

thanks chaps

I was more wondering about the "home brew" aspect of feeding......
ie a bucket of nettles steeped in water for 10 days and when sufficiently foul smelling use as directed type of thingy!

Nettle brew is rather a N feed, I'd think you better off with other stuff for fruiting time.

Hi gobs.....can you explain what you mean by N feed please. We've just took on a plot and were advised to pick some of the nettles and soak them in a bin of rain water but the guy didn't suggest what it would be best suited for. Also would Comfry be a good feed for tom's?
