Beetroot Bugs!!! Help!!!
« on: July 01, 2008, 21:54 »
The leaves of my beetroot plants are all going brown and withering away. On closer inspection there are litle maggoty things inside the leaves. What are they and what do i do?? Ive pulled off the infected leaves but more keep appearing.

Please help I've only started growing this year and don't have a clue.

Could be Mangold Fly a/k/a Beet Leaf Miner.

Organic way is to do as you have done & pull off the affected leaves and also to loosen the soil around the root to expose them to birds.

Otherwise, it's spray, by the looks of it!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Leaf miners on their own hardly cause very big damage to them, aren't sprayed for even commercially. The leaves don't normally brown and die with miners in. They leave characteristic tunnels on the leaves as if scribbled on.

Take them off and if no joy, post a picture.

In that case, you'd better tell Dr. Hessayon!

I'd rather you break that to him, Dave, I'm not a mate.

That's my personal experience and I'm not intimidated with any H word and the likes to talk my mind.

They might die , just as any other old leaf would do, not much sooner and defo not as fast as the question post lets to suggest, we wouldn't really have a chance to see leaf miner damage on the leaf for weeks on end, would we?
