Stalking
« on: July 01, 2008, 14:04 »
Our Rhode Island Red has developed a habit of stalking.

She does it to everyone - the dogs, DS, DH and myself.

If you go out to have a cuppa and chicken watch she stalks up and down the pen giving you the eye.  This is predominately about an hour before bed time.

They she starts muttering which gets louder and louder.  Then she fluffs her wings and starts giving it large.  This goes on for about 5 minutes and then she calms down.  If you open the lid of the pen she tries to fly out!

She's a minx because if you feed her a treat she doesn't do it.

She's the smallest of the 4 birds, but we know who's in charge!

She's also always the last one to bed.  She nudges the other girls into the coup!

If I remember I'll video it next time.
new to hens
Thanks
T

she is not stupid, especially where food is concerned.

We've had her 1 1/2 weeks and she'll sit on your knee if a grape is going!

She scares the dogs.  I have a 100lb lab and a cocker spaniel who run away from her!  both dogs have been trained to pick up birds alive and dead without harming, but they are dead scared of Madras the Rhode Island Red!  She stares them out and they run away.

It does make me chuckle.

Is it always the smallest bird who becomes the boss?

My smallest duck is definately the bossiest and pushiest :tongue2:
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Ive got a Belgium Danvers who is the size of a Dove and she sticks her chest out and attacks the 2 new Warrens I bought who are 4 times her size. She chases them and pecks them even when they arent doing anything.
Oh for those halcyon days of England long ago
