Interesting thread for a newbie to growing tomatoes.  We are growing what seems to be a popular choice Gardner's Delight - now I am keen to make sure they taste good.

Thought watering was a good thing, been watering every 2-3 days - just as soil on the top of the pot is starting to get dry.  Is that about right, what suggestions do you all have please?

Hi Willnbirdie sounds about right to me, just don't let the compost dry out, the sudden rush of water can make the tom's split it's a bit of a balancing act.  :)

Gardeners' Delight are the best for flavour.
It took me several years when I was younger to find that flavour is in the variety, not the culture. I have tried others but found nothing to touch GD. They also have the advantage of ripening in succession, not all at once like, e.g., Moneymaker

There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.

G. Delight are great for quantity - will take a pix of my third truss which must have about 100 flowers on it - as I am new to this site, it may take me a while to get right size, etc for sending. Home-made tomato sauce anyone?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

If you use something like 'Photobucket', I find 640 x 480 pixels about right.

Now you lot have confused me about watering.  I have a GD and a MM both in pots that are planted in a grobag.  I use an upturned milk bottle to water directly into the bag and fill the 2pt bottle most days (They are in a plastic ghouse in a southfacing garden).

Is this too much water?  The compost on top of the plants is usually dry but as they are  producing toms that look nice and healthy (albeit still green) I assumed they were happy - what do you think, is this too much?

My toms are in 9" pots and I've had the odd day where they've wilted due to lack of water unless I water almost every day.

My theory is that the top section of soil is getting all the water and so it isn't reaching the bottom of the pot. Does this sound likely? I'm not sure how much water to use when I water them.

Perhaps I'm doing too little too often - should I go for a really good soak less often?

My toms are planted in the earth in my greenhouse and they are never short of water - nevertheless, their tops can wilt if the temperature is too high.

If you are growing in containers, whether it be pots or growbags, it is possible for water to channel through the compost, leaving much of it bone dry. This applies to any plant in a plant pot. The only way to find out is to dig into it and have a look. One solution to this is to put some washing-up liquid in the water, so that it wets more easily.

I found that growbags created so many problems that I gave up using them.
