Growing blackberries?
« on: June 27, 2008, 10:39 »
Anyone grown them.  Are they really too much work.  How much space do they really take up and finally do they need a fruit cage?

They are dead easy, plant them in a well manured spot bung two posts at least  6' either side of the plant and wire up at 18" 24" and 36". train the blackberry one way one year, then the other the next. Then as they have fruited you can remove the canes  easily with out getting them mixed up. Buy a cultivated variety such as "loch ness" which is thornless with big berries, or get someone to strike a cutting if you don't mind waiting till next year.

You may need a fruit cage or just drape a net over the plant, finally blackberrys can grow up to 12' in length.

Thanks for that. Wowee, 12' in length.   I don't think it will go where I thought then.  Need a rethink!

Useful tip about trailing the branches one way one year and t'other the next, not actually read that anywhere!

There is a black berry bush running along the fence at our lottie - half on our side and half in next door.

Earlier in the season I treated it like I would our logan berry and cut off the woody branches (I believe they wouldn't of fruited anyway - someone correct me please if I am wrong).

Now the thing is huge with tons of flowers on it and some of the fruit starting to set already.  Hoping to get loads of blackberries we absolutely love 'em - think the birds like them too so I will be covering with netting or something similar - try and keep as many for us as possible.

Surprisingly, there is no need to cover them usually.
