so straw is best, but shredded paper makes a sufficient substitute?

If so, that's good to know... I've got quite a lot of old paper work to dispose of!

I've been using some of mine as a mulch around my sweetcorn;  it's biodegradable and will exclude enough light to make any weeds coming up gtow spindly and weak and I can fork it into the soil in autumn to help with moisture retention  :D
