Do my toms need pruning?
« on: June 25, 2008, 10:51 »
I have 3 varieties of toms in a growbag, Moneymaker, Alicante and Gardeners Delight and they are growing really well all with flowers only problem is they are very bushy and I'm worried they are all going  to be competing for light and energy soon at the expence of the fruit.

I have read its good to prune them below the flower line is this right and does anyone have any tips?

I need to broach the subject with the OH who is very protective of his charges so more info the better!  :D

Many thanks

All 3 varieties are the cordon type which means you should pinch out any side shoots.
I personally don't remove leaves below the flower line, the leaves are the plants food factory so it seems a bit pointless to me

Thanks Richy, just to confirm that side shoots are the little jobbies that grow out from the join between the stem and branches?

Yep them's the ones  :D

Incidentally if you want a few more tom plants quick, put the side shoots in a pot and keep them well watered within a fortnight they will have rooted and be growing.

Actually GD can be grown either way, but in a grow bag I'd grow it as a cordon.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

What about bush tomatoes?

As far as I'm aware, you don't need to pinch out their sideshoots, but are you supposed to limit the number of trusses they set?

Cheers
Helen

p.s. I don't know if it's relevant, but I'm growing "Aurora" tomatoes, three plants to an 80cm trough, outdoors on my patio.
