Grit/eggshells?
« on: June 24, 2008, 20:07 »
Quick question...

I heard a while ago that crushed eggshells can be given to the chooks in place of grit but my partner seems to think this is rubbish and they need proper grit? which one is true?

Thanks  :D

Grit acts as millstones to grind up food to aid digestion (an alternative to those hans teeth :D ) Egg shells provide calcium to produce, well egg shells. It replaces oyster shells sho she is right I'm afraid. (seems a bit of a faff to me too)
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

We used the baked, crushed eggshell method for a while but it is a grind (forgive the pun) having to mess about preparing it all.

Oyster grit is about 50-60p/kg in bulk and they don't get through much so if you can get it, do so. Gives them all they need in one product.

Good for sandcastles.  :)

No idea about the seashells. Sharp sand contains lots of rounded grit-sized pebbles but you need some nice jagged grit for them I think. I've been lobbing some grit/shell into the sandbox for them to rootle through but also in a pot separately.
