What's the best small tree?
« on: June 21, 2008, 15:22 »
I'm talking average garden tree here.. not a monster (no monkey puzzles)

nothing too 'sticky' as I can't bear sappy trees..

we are shopping for a tree that will symbolise our adoption of our daughter :) and be part of the family.. i know.. I'm a tree hugger as well as a chicken hugger!
Fruiting is good as is Blossom or even just plain old pretty.
Any suggestions welcome :) and then i'll commence the search! lol

Thanks

Amalanchier is a great small tree for all seasons. 8)

First of all, congratulations!   I know it is boring, but the good old apple will go on for years.   Each apple that you pick will remind you of how lucky you are to have a beautiful daughter.   And what about a "Family Tree" with several apples grafted on one stock?  :D  :D

What a great site Jan thanks :)

How DO you entwine trees? can you do that as in twist the trunks as they go (am thinking olive trees vaguely in my memory). The various apples sounds like a great idea :) I love little rustic apples but the girls love red/pink apples lol

Thanks for the congrats :)

Have to agree with Gobs, you will have to look hard to find a small tree which will beat Amalanchier canadensis.
It has a lovely habit, great blossom, berries and fabulous red Autumn foliage.

 :)

Berries are edible, that of some is said to be gorgeous, not cultivated though for size and impossible to save from birds.

Miss-spelt it for you though, Amelanchier it is.

Problem is, planting a tree like that in an averge garden means the tree has been condemed as soon as it was planted.

I planted as a ten year old an acorn in a pot to mark the beginning of a new life in a new home in another area of the country with my parents.

Now 25 years later, that acorn is a lovely 3 foot tree, in a large pot, and has moved around the country with me.

I love the idea I can take it with me, and it will never grow too large with it being kept in a pot (and trimmed back once a year).  It looks lovely too.
