Unwell Chicken
« on: June 20, 2008, 20:15 »
Hi,

I have 4 chickens, which I got at Easter. Unfortunately, "Chips" is unwell  :(
I took her to the vets last sunday and she has been on baytril antibiotics for the week and Avipro plus in water (pro/prebiotic) but doesnt seem much better.
She is hunched up with her tail down and just standing around most of the time, she not really eating, although she showed a bit of interest in some bread earlier. The other 3 chickens are perfectly well. The breeder has suggested cider apple vinegar mixed with water, which I will try tomorrow.

She is not crop bound....but was wondering whether she might be egg bound?? How would I check?

Any other advise would be gratefully appreciated :)

Thank you.

Welcome rabuto,

In theory the vet should have noticed of that was the case. However.

This thread EGGBOUND THREAD has some advice from peggyprice about checking and treating for eggbound chickens.

Have a read and see if it matches any symptoms.

Rob  :)

Thanks Rob, will definitely give it a try. She does seem to have the symptoms of being egg bound. Chickens seem to be difficult animals to diagnose

Will let you know how I get on. :D

Best of luck to you both. They can be very good at hiding their symptoms for fear of being picked on.

By the time you notice it makes the job a lot more difficult !  :?

If you can find any other symptoms or eliminate a few things, you should get some better advice soon enough.

Hoep she rights herself.

Hi rabuto

How old is Chips?

Has she been laying eggs recently ?

What were they like?

What are her poos like ?

Is the area around her bottry swollen at all ?

Can you feel an egg in her tummy ?

Hi Aunt Sally,

Sorry for the delay in replying, I logged off last night to try sort chips out. She is approx 7 months old. No she is not laying now, her poo is whiteish yellow and runny. No her bottom is not swollen and looks normal, no inflammation or redness.
I dont think there is an egg in there ( I hope I am right), I've had a good feel, I assume it would feel hard if there was an egg.....and felt the other chickens and they seem to feel the same. As Rob (Poultrygeist) said, you would like the think the vet would've known if she was egg bound, (He seemed quite knowledgeable about chickens).

Today she is still quiet, I now have her indoors in a box with a heat mat, with "buffet selection" of pellets, wetted pellets, corn and bread, she had bit of a peck but hasnt really eaten anything. She has been drinking though. I have also given her some cider apple vinegar, so fingers crossed this will help. How soon should this take effect?

I have 1 more day of baytril, but would've thought this should have made a difference by now.

Fingers crossed she will pick up. I dont know what else to do for her  :(

It's not nice knowing they aren't feeling 100% but from reading what you've been doing, I doubt at this moment you could possibly do any more.

Read TooManyGirls post about a prayer for Pauline

Hens are tough little things when they want to be, but I'll still keep my fingers crossed for Chips

Yellow runny poo can be a sign of worms or coccidiosis.

You've not mentioned if you've wormed her (or your other hens) rabuto.  But I would sugest that you do - I'd use flubenvet !

Coccidiosis is another possibility that can be treated with Coxoid.

Do have a look in our Poultry Information section at the topics there too.

Hi Aunt Sally,

Thanks for the information. I have found Flubenvet, it says "Chickens & Geese - 240g of Flubenvet Intermediate gamekeeper pack per 200kg of feed". Sorry if I sound stupid but I assume I reduce the amount according to the amount of food.  Just want to be sure.

Couple of questions...

1. Do I just mix it with their food?
2. How can I be sure they all get some? Chips isnt really eating much, so unless I get her to eat it she probably wont get any.....  :?

Is it ok to give both Flubenvet and Coxoid at the same time?

Thanks you. :D

Hello
Took Chips back to vets yesterday as she's still unwell. The vet confirmed she is not egg bound and prescribed Trimacare tablets for Coccidiosis. Thought it would be quicker to get something from him rather than order online and wait for it to arrive.

She seemed to perk up after we left the vets and even ate some bread and apple and was having a mosey around the garden - I was so pleased  :D  but this morning she is back to how she was - not eating and standing about...its so frustrating

I have ordered Flubenvet and also and insecticide spray for the coup, however, I am assuming if it is mites all the chickens would be ill?

Anyway, that the update for now....perhaps she will miraculously be better by the time I get home from work???

Kerry
