How many peas?
« on: June 20, 2008, 17:45 »
When I lift my first earlies shortly, I plan to put some peas in the vacant space.
However, I just wanted to know how many peas I should plant?
There is only me and hubby at home so I don't want to over do it.
I therefore, was just wondering how many pea pods one can expect from one plant ?

p.s. we love peas

:sunny: wishing you all a sunny weekend

To give you some idea, when I grew some heritage peas purely for their seed, I didn't count the pods, but had a return of between 40-60 single peas, depending on the variety. This was with very careful germination of the seed. I guess this would be about 7-9 pods per plant.

Mildew can be a problem with late sown peas, we planted some on Mrs. DD's plot about this time of year 3 years ago, having cleared it & for the sake of putting something in. The peas grew to about 6" high & the yield was terrible.

This of course depends on the growing conditions as 2 years prior I made a late sowing and had an excellent crop in October!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Also depends if you only want to eat them fresh or also frozen.  last year I planted three nine foot rows (as per packet) and had about a dozen meals where I added tiny peas to stir fries and maybe half a dozen where the peas were a vegetable part of the meal from frozen.  this year I am growing 6 9 foot rows and think that for me this may still not be enough!  I feed four adult appetites through the summer and three during term time.

200? is that plants or pea pods?????

I have 10 seeds germinating in the cold frame and plan to sow another 36 tomorrow so they are ready to go in when the tattys come out.

Is that going to be enough for a good harvest do you think guys?

 :)

"200? is that plants or pea pods????? " sorry couldn't get the quote ting to work.

I think he'll mean 200 feet of peas.

If you work on the basis of roughly 1 pea plant per inch that should give you a rough idea.
 :D

You can never have enough peas !!

When I'm being lazy and get bags and bags full I even freeze them whole in the pods and then just defrost and shell them when you want'em,It works fine honestly.

That's right - 200 feet.

4 x 32 feet rows of Kelvedon Wonder, row of Jaguar, 3 types of heritage pea & 3 shorter rows of mange tout.

Apologies to those who have seen this already, but in the best Blue Peter tradition - 'Here's some I sowed earlier'.

(Very) rough guide to sowing spacing.

In practice - handful thown in.

46 plants will make about a 4' row.
