To pinch the top of my tomato plant or not.
« on: June 20, 2008, 14:01 »
I have a moneymaker in a pot in a grobag in a plastic 3 tier greenhouse.

It has reached the top of the greenhouse (although the gardeners delight next to it hasn't).

Shall I pinch out the top (only has 4 trusses) or shall I just take the plastic off the greenhouse leaving it an outdoor plant (allbeit next to a south facing corner)

I guess that 57 views & no replies speaks volumes. IMHO it's a hard one to call.

If you leave it in you'll have to stop it, if you take the top off so that it's a halfway outside plant, it reall won't want many more trusses anyway.

Perhaps the great British compromise & take the top off & let it have one more truss.

But there again, if you leave it fully inside, you'll get your toms earlier.

Your call!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I think you may have missed the point that they've reached the top of the greenhouse, Peter!

I've been growing them for over 40 years and DO pinch the tops out when they reach the top.

With all this blight about, I would not hesitate and lock them up. 8)

peterjf, what do you do when they got to the roof then? :tongue2:

I've had to pinch mine out as they hit the roof - four to six trusses each. I reckon I'll keep these for early ripening, I have gardeners delight to go in the garden and I might keep a few back to bring indoors for the end of the seaon.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
