Retarded Comfrey?

All this talk of comfrey is making me jealous.  :(

I planted this stuff back at the beginning of the year and it seems to be doing very poorly.

Its on a north facing slope , gets around 10-12 hours of direct sunlight a day. I read posts of 5-6 ft, these are 1ft at best. Its nasty sandy soil up there and we've not seen much rain lately.

Is it lack of water, lack of food or just a bad location. I was expecting a cut this year to feed the toms - should I leave them alone this season and let them get established.

Sorry don't know the answer to your question but you are doing better than us - ours didn't even germinate  :?

Comfrey has great long tap roots ... that go seeking goodies in the soil too deep down for little plantlets!

I can not see the point on them being where they are!   :? Perhaps you could move them to the back of you compost heap ... there they will be able to 'harvest' what sinks into the ground ...

... then you can make comfrey 'tea'   :D

I wouldn't bother moving as they'll grow anywhere. They shall pick up.

Seem rather closely planted.

I thought that but they really dont seem happy. Im really pushed for flat space and was hoping I could use the hill for something. Id be happy if it seeded everywhere and I ended up with a comfrey forest...

18 Inches if memory serves me - its a poor picture from a funny angle and the less said about the weeds the better

After 2 packets of T&M seeds and 6 months of trying I had 4 plants, gave up in the end and bought root cuttings from fleabay.

I bought some Bocking 14 rooted cuttings from the Organic Gardening Catalogue in April. When they arrived, I put them all together in a plastic pot about 8" across. They seemed fine until recently, now they've gone a bit yellow in the veins and haven't really grown much. Should I plant them in the ground now?

Yes, as the clouds fell down they should recover, hopefully. :)

Mine still look pathetic

The Pumpkin I put up there next to them seems fine its growing like Topsy but theres no sign of rampant weed like growth from the comfrey. I think its broken.  I may try relocating one of the plants by a compost bin just incase.
