White and Watery Potatoes
« on: June 16, 2008, 23:04 »
I picked my first potatoes of the year this evening.

They were either Rocket or Maris Piper I can't seem to find the label i put on the stick

They looked very very white instead of the usual yellow and the skin just fell off when you washed them, once they were boiled they were exceptionally watery and absolutely disgusting. Most of the tatties were about 25-30mm in size

The only thing I can think of is that they are Maris Pipers and its much to early to pick them.
If they are the rocket then I won't be growing them again

Any ideas

sounds like your spuds have been standing in water, how deep did you plant them, we plant ours at 8-9 inches deep

A bit of a thread resurection.

It turns out that the potatos are Rocket as they are pure white with very little skin.

Basically all I did was over cook them.

I have been advised to seperate them into size when I cook them so as to keep cooking time the same also with the larger sized potatoes I should cut them otherwise the outside tend to become really fluffy and wtery and the inside remains hard.
A difficult * to cook but they do taste nice when you get it right.

Has anyone else had any issues.

They do give a bumper crop though

I've been very disappointed with the Rocket that we have been harvesting. Decent sized potatoes but most of them have holes in. Think maybe slugs have had them? I've been cutting out the holes and checking for the little critters inside but when boiling them they seem to disintergrate, despite being cut into similar sizes and not over cooked. I've got around this by then frying them with onion and garlic but they are not the firm tasty new potatoes I was hoping for :(  Don't think I will bother again.
Where's the Radox?!!

This year i tried Arran pilot much better crop and lovely tasting spuds,,
will be using these again next year.

My earlies are Pentland Javelin. We've had two feeds of them so far from one plant. Very nice indeed.
