Thinking of getting some chooks
« on: June 16, 2008, 21:46 »
Hi all I am thinking of  getting some chickens for egg laying, I already have a shed & a run. However, the run has not been used for hens for at least 20 years and was overgrown with brambles etc so I killed it all off with roundup(this was before I decided to get some hens) will the ground be ok to let hens use the run.
Ps Quite exited cant wait to start. :D  :D

Hi Geoff

I'm not sure about round up or if it's safe and if so when but I'm sure if you email the company they will advise you.

I do hope you get some hens soon and yep it's exciting :bounce:  :bounce:

Hello and welcome to the henhouse!

This link may help you with any concerns re: Roundup. It mentions its use  by various wildlife conservation agencies. It is bioegradable over time and does not build up in the soil.

Hope this helps!

Hi  all, thanks for the help. I have got the shed ready, nest boxes etc, just need to get the pen ready, is a 4m* 3m run big enough for 6 chucks? also I can buy some goldlines 18 weeks old for 10.50 each vacinated & guaranteed,  also some black rocks @ 12 weeks for 3.50 each, can any one advise which would be the best buy for a beginer . Sorry for all the questions.
Chhers geoff  :)  :)
