Thought I would share.

During the week I was down at the plot. The back end was covered in couch grass and I round-upped a few weeks back. All looked dead and I wanted to start using the space.

In other areas I have used a small fire to burn the top growth off so that I can see the ground. On this occasion I thought I might just get the grass going on its own. After several minutes with a piece of burning newspaper I was getting nowhere. Suddenly a breeze picked up and the grass ignited with a whoosh. The fire lept forward up the plot towards my apple tree and shed.

I ran for the shed to get my watering cans, then down the plot to the water butt, then into the fire.

All in all there was no real risk, but what I am worried about is the neighbours. All the time I was running about I was laughing my head off. Even standing in the middle of the flames in shorts and sandles. I thought it was hilarious. At any moment I expected a big helicopter with a water bowser to come over.

Anyway my apple tree is roasted, but otherwise job well done! Space has already been repurposed for a Munty frame, jobs a good un.

 I chuckled at the mental image of you chasing the flames with your watering can.

But, a lesson learned for me for when I finally get my plot, keep fires to the incinerator

Oops! Good job it was your tree, not a neighbours,  and I reckon you've learnt to keep water close at hand when lighting fires. ;) Firebreaks are a good idea too.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Well, another word of caution, someone had a fire on the parking lot last autumn here.    You guessed it, it looked dead, they left it, I didn't even notice it parking up, 10 minutes later, something smells real bad, all smokes under the car.

Take care, some things are really dangerous to be careless about.

Hmmm, you got me thinking about this idea now

Maybe if I make sure i have someone else around a tubs full of water this could work for me as I have just taken on another half plot whcih I have just strimmed and is now covered in dead grass!

So tempting

Glad you managed to get the situation under control.

Cheers,
