Chilli Pepper Disease?
« on: June 15, 2008, 09:55 »
I grew some chilli peppers from seed this year and all of them have developed the same problem.  The leaves are curling up and the growth seems to be seriously affected.  Last year I had a bumper crop

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Could be related symptoms, but on taking it easy, what do you mean growth is affected? Capsicum is not a fast grower from seed, did you grow them from seed last year, too, same varieties?

Curly leaf can be a different thing and if no other probs, not to worry about.

Any chance of a picture? and any idea on variety?

There are a few causes but check for red spidermites and greenfly - both can cause serious problems to younger plants, especially if you're growing indoors or in the greenhouse.

Curling leaves can sometimes be a symptom of irregular watering. We've got a variety of chillies growing in greenhouse, a few have got some curled & puckered leaves, but there's no sign whatsoever of anything else that might be causing it. The plants look really healthy otherwise & flowering. Hopefully if your plants have no other signs or symptoms they are just taking their time and the curling leaves shouldn't be an issue.

Our puckered leaves that I described don't look as severe so maybe there is something else going on. Perhaps give 'em a spray and keep your fingers crossed!

mmmm - doesn't look good.

It really does look like aphids- but with that sort of damage you should be able to see hundreds of them !! Are all the leaves like that or just the new ones? The top right leaf looks like it has white thing on it?

For a start Id cut 6 inches off the plant, it looks to be having problems flowering anyway, give it a good feed and encourage new leaf growth.

After that it depends on your attitude to chemicals.

Either spray with a good bug killer or fill a bucket with water with a splash of washing up liquid in and dunk the whole plant (except roots) upside down in it. Drastic I know but give the plant leaves/stem a good wash.

You'll probably loose the current leaves but its the new growth you need undamaged. If the roots are healthy you'd be really surprised the abuse you can give peppers before they give up.

Keep us posted

Look at thrip damage and mosaic virus in chillies, plenty photos on the web, if either of those look like yours.

I had some slightly curling leaves on my peppers recently. On inspection I found whitefly under the leaves that were really hard to spot. I sprayed them and now all ok. This could be your problem, they are so very small and easy to miss.

There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.

Are there not whitefly, (or something!), visible on the top right leaf?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'll arrange my appointment at the optician right away  :D

There are one or two white fly and a couple of aphids, but I didn't expect one or two to have such a devastating impact on the plant.   I'll try the suggestion of dipping in soap solution (trying to stay organic) and see how it goes.

Thanks all for the advice.
