wow-too many flowers!
« on: June 12, 2008, 21:40 »
My aubergine plants are amazing!  They are huge and very very strong and bigger than my toms!  However there are about 30 flowers on each plant.  I had just been watering them and not really paying them too much attention however I did a count up today.  I was suprised

How many should I take off?

Mine haven't any flowers on yet, but my peppers (bell) have!  I think you should aim for growing about 6 - 8 fruits per plant???

Okay-hmmm...

I think I will take off all but 10 flowers.  What do you think?

This will give me some to play with.

I guess it depends a bit on how big your container is for them and when the fruits appear you're supposed to feed them with tomato feed...  it's my first year that I've got them past seedling stage, you see!  Before you chop anything off, just check what someone else says... so you don't shoot me later in the year!   :D

I've never been in this situation - green with envy - depends on variety, I suppose, some really don't manage many fruit on this summer there are lots that are more prolific though.

Are they in pots? Just nosy...

I have 2 grow bags (tomerite)

In those I have 2 toms and I aubergine in each.  They are the fully size variety so I know they will not produce that much fruit!  I bought them very cheaply from the gerden centre looking very sorry for themselves about 5cm tall and now they are nearly 60/70cm tall and very very bushy.

I could still all go wrong though.   :?

Well, I'm noticing this year - that's why I asked - that re- potted extra reserves have more flower and buds than those planted up and out. Hmm.

I once grew one and managed about 10 fruit, 2 big ones and about 8 medium to small ones.

I'd stick to about 10 flowers so if you get 10 big 'uns then thats great but 10 medium ones is ok too ?

My plants were as thorny as hell though and I used to cut myself to ribbons .
